about

A folk song from the 1970s that protests against the rich "people on the hill" that "try to make us" working-class people " kneel"--while working-class people create their own proletarian art--which was written while living in the flatlands of Berkeley, California.

lyrics

(chorus)
People on the hill
Try to make us kneel
People down below
Write their songs and poems.
(verses)
The people on the hill
They hire guards to kill
And worship wealth and seek both fame and power.
The people in the valley
Will organize a rally
To show the rich they want much more than flowers. (chorus)
The people on the hill live in a closed-off world
Where no one dares to ask any sharp questions
The people in the valley are often quite unhappy
And experience many feelings of frustration. (chorus)
The people on the hill they threaten us with their their bills
And will punish you if you dare to defy them
The people down below are told that "change comes slow"
And to limit their dreams and their aspirations. (chorus)
The people on the hill, they fill their minds with pills
And try to create a new Pig Generation
The people on the bottom, their obstacle is their division
And their failure to establish communism. (chorus)
